2011 Opp Library Summer Reading Program

The theme for the summer reading program for the children is One World, Many Stories. Our preliminary plans for the children's program this year include the following dates and activities:

Wed July 6 SKIP the Magic Man! 10am (everyone)
Skip is from Sheffield, Alabama and travels all across the world doing magic shows for audiences of all ages! This is the third year that Skip came, and the show has been different EACH YEAR! The children love the balloon animals, Herdini (the rabbit that was named Houdini until Skip discovered it was a girl), and the amazing magic tricks! The adults love the jokes, and how he encourages the children to read and visit the library!

Mon July 11 China 10am (K-2) and 2pm (3rd and up)
We will be reading an old Chinese folktale and creating an awesome craft. The small children will make a fan, while the older kids will enjoy making a paper lantern. Each child will receive a prize for attendance!

Tues July 12 10am (K-2) and 2pm (3rd and up)
We will be reading a story and making a craft from the Netherlands (Dutch). Our activity for this day is still in the drawing room. Each child will receive a prize for attendance and a random drawing of reading logs!

Wed July 13 10am (K-2) and 2pm (3rd and up)
We will be watching Disney's Peter and the Wolf and making Matroyshka Dolls from Russia. Each child will receive a prize for attendance and a random drawing of reading logs!

Thurs July 14 10am (K-2) and 2pm (3rd and up)
We will be reading a story about Japanese culture and making a Carp flag. Older children will also get the opportunity to make an origami jumping frog! Each child will receive a prize for attendance and a random drawing of reading logs!

Fri July 15 10am (K-2) and 2pm (3rd and up)
AWARDS DAY
We will be dancing and celebrating the close of the summer reading program with maracas and Mexican music, such as La Cucaracha and Mexican Hat Dance. We will also be awarding all the prizes for the Top Readers. Each child will receive a prize for attendance and a random drawing of reading logs!
You must be present to win!
